Award winning S.O.K.S vests were "born" late in 2009, although the seeds of the idea were planted in my mind 2 years earlier when my son was just 2 years old and I had just given birth to my second baby. At playgrounds, I started experiencing first hand just how quickly a toddler can disappear out of sight. I lived through the terror of realising I didn't know where he was on quite a few occasions, and my search for a high visibility vest or tabard that I could dress him in to make him "stand out from the crowd" began. I scoured the internet and was dismayed to discover that there was nothing on the market for such young toddlers. The ugly "council worker" or "cyclist" type fluorescent vests did come in child sizes, but only from age 4 upwards. That was of no use to me or my active 2 year old. I moaned that there was nothing available, and tried to carry on as best I could without. I realised as my first son and daughter grew, that they tended not to play in the same space at playgrounds, theme parks and the like. I spent all my time looking backwards and forwards between the two of them, trying to keep track of where they were, but this was sometimes near impossible given the masses of children enjoying the same location. As fun as these places were for the kids, I found keeping track of them very stressful. So, out of necessity, S.O.K.S vests were born. I wanted my children to be safer, and I wanted greater peace of mind. I wanted to help parents and myself to breathe a little easier and to have more opportunity to relax a little when taking their precious toddler to these hectic environments. Of course, the vests don't alleviate the need for proper adult supervision, but they certainly make it so much easier to spot your child in busy surroundings. I soon realised that there were many daily scenarios the vests would be useful in - trips to shopping centres, soft play zones, school runs, nature walks, concerts/football matches, trips to airports etc etc. The great thing is that S.O.K.S also increase OTHER people's awareness of your child - great for those walks to pre-school or playgroups by busy roadways. The funky, toddler-friendly designs ensure that kids LOVE wearing them too, so you'll never have any arguments there. The people have voted and this year we have won two awards too. Parents and kids alike love our funky vests! And unfortunately, in these modern times when predators exist and prey on our children, the vests may act as a deterrent as a child becomes highly visible in the fluorescent colours and easy to spot - not good news for someone trying to snatch a child unnoticed. So, keep those toddlers safe - get their S.O.K.S on!
